Curly Deco Mesh Wreath Tutorial

A huge puff of pastel curls grabs your attention with a Curly Deco Mesh Wreath. These curly mesh wreaths are a fun alternative to the basic deco mesh puff wreath style. We had lots of requests for a tutorial for those precious curly pumpkin wreaths we saw last fall on Pinterest.  We have finally posted  the tutorial below to show you how to make a fun spiral curls wreath for yourself. Sorry it took us so long- but I think this yummy pastel colored version was worth the wait!

Easily turn this fun curly wreath into a Happy Birthday wreath by adding a cute paper pennant banner! Click here to get this free printable pennant pattern.

The total cost of this wreath will be about $20, depending on the color and finish of deco mesh that you are using. You can choose any combination of colors to customize this wreath.

This wreath used only a portion of each color, so you will need at least 2 rolls of deco mesh. The wreath in this tutorial uses a Red work wreath form and Cream Vertical Line, Light Pink, 2-tone Gold/Gold and Metallic Orange deco mesh. Work wreath forms have pre-attached tinsel wire tips. Deco Mesh holds its curly form without wired edges.

STEP 1
Cut all of your curls of deco mesh. Each should be about 9 or 10 inches wide. You will need about 72 individual curls.

If you want a wreath that is not as full, use less curls. This wreath uses 4 curls per wire tie, so try 3 or 2 curls for a less full wreath if desired.

STEP 2
Gather 4 curls together in the middle, in this case, one of each color. It helps to curl each one a little more before doing this. Again, if you want a less full wreath, use less curls at this point.

STEP 3
Secure the middle of the bunch into a set of wire ties on the work wreath form. Twist the tinsel covered wire ties several time to attach the curls. Then fluff up the curls.

STEP 4
Repeat steps 2 and 3, and continue filling in the entire wreath. Make sure you place the curls into every wire tie set on the work wreath form.

Once you have filled in the wreath, straighten out the curls so that they point outward. You may have to rotate and adjust the wire ties and curls from the back to make the curls more even looking.

This wreath is HUGE when it is complete. It is approximately 30" wide when made on a 24" wreath form  so it makes a big impact on a door.

Topped off with the printable pennant banner this wreath becomes the focal point of a birthday party!

  3. How do you get your curls so tight? When mine came off the rolls, they were pretty loose and I couldn't get them smaller. Any suggestions?

  4. Heather,

Ours came off the roll in curls. I would try rolling it up into a tight curl when you attach it to the wreath from. This would help to keep the curl shape at the ends. From the photo you can see that some of our curls are not tight. I think once the wreath form is filled in that it will look right. Hope this helps!

  7. I made one.... and you are right!!! LOL My DIL's was too big for her door, so I took it apart & we are redoing it with a smaller frame. Also- I did 2 bunches per pipe cleaner, one on top of the other, then pulled it to the side & attached it to the frame. I like full :D Thank you for these directions- they are hard to find!!!

  10. How do you keep the edges of the rolls from ravelling out where you cut them?

    1. Deco Mesh can be a little "stringy" at times. Generally the Deluxe and Wide Foil styles unravel much less often. if you have a wreath or craft project thats being difficult, you can add a dot of hot glue or clear nail polish (let it get tacky) to the edge, in an area where it won't be visible. Often though, you can just pull the line of mesh and cut it right above where it catches, and it won't change the quality or look of your finished design.

      Thanks for the Question!

  13. I'm working on a wreath right now, but my sprials don't seem to want to face outward. Any ideas? I'm not quite finished, but will they face forward as it gets more full? Thanks!

  14. How did you keep the mesh from fraying out. I've tried Glue, Non fraying product for ribbon etc. The wreath is absolutely beautiful & your instructions were easy to follow.
